Free Event
Friday, July 31, 2026 from 3:00 PM to Sunday, August 2, 2026 at 1:00 PM
This is not a free event. Can’t really figure out the ticket system. 60 dollars to do this. I will also say for payment, everything will be prepaid so you will not pay me until you are on Lakeshore Drive on Friday July 31. This way I don’t have to deal with refunds. You’re either coming or you’re not. This is a 2 night, 2 day campout at Buchan Bay from July 31 to August 2. Maximum of 6 people can do this. If you want to do this it will cost you 60 dollars which will include a boat ride from Gellatly to Buchan Bay plus the 2 night camping fee of 13 dollars per night. There will be absolutely no pre drinking or drinking alcohol on the boat (once on shore, do what you want). You must have your own camping gear. Tents for gen x, hammocks for the millennials (or do you guys use tents too?) let me know in the comments. Water is of utmost importance (you don't have to pack it in so be generous with how much you bring, I'm thinkin 10 litres, no joke because if I don't have my coffee in the morning.....hellfire) but this is why we're going to Buchan Bay, there is a small stream here that you can filter water from if you run out. Just so you know what you're getting yourself into, we will be getting as close to shore as possible from a pontoon boat and we will have to pull you and your bag into shore by rope (you will have your life jackets on). There are no docks here, this is not season 2 of Canada shore, this is real life. I have a paddle board we can use but just expect to get wet to start the trip. Are we having fun yet? That's the gist of it. So, many moons ago I back packed across Central America (from Mexico to Panama) and there was a section in Costa Rica where we had to make a choice. Take a 6 hour bus ride from Monteverde to La Fortuna or do a jeep boat jeep ride, reducing the travel time to 3 hours to get to the Arenal Volcano. We went jeep boat jeep and to this day......glad we did. Taking a boat ride across the lake from Gellatly to Buchan bay is essentially the same thing, a time saving measure instead of hiking all your heavy water and "water" to the campsite. So how it works is, for those interested, you will park your vehicle way down Lakeshore road in Kelowna at 3pm on Friday July 31 afternoon. You will then be shuttled over to Gellatly where we will get on a boat at 5 pm and shuttled over to Buchan Bay. You must be packed and ready to go (try to waterproof your bag to be safe). It's most likely going to be hot so hopefully it will have cooled down a little for you to pick your camp spot and set up. Buchan bay has an outhouse toilet, 2 picnic tables, 2 fire rings and 3 bear lockers to keep your food safe and a small stream of water coming down the mountain. The next day it is my personal mission to walk 3 kms to Commando Bay to check it out. You can stay at the campsite and read a book (or scroll) if you want but not me. Nope. I'm a jack rabbit, let's go, I want to see something. Saturday is a free time, do what you want thing, unravel if you have to but definitely go swimming. We'll bring cards, anyone play crib? If you decide to bring a hammock instead of a tent, that's fine, just know that you will be a perfect height to become a bear burrito. Sunday morning we will pack up (that means garbage too) and begin the 13.5 km walk back to your car. Here you will get to walk through Wildhorse Canyon and yes these walls talk back too (not as good as Rose Valley though). Every time I've walked through Okanagan Mountain Park I've seen rattlesnakes, and I will find one for you too. I will make it take pictures with you. In Belize the kids would go tarantula hunting by overturning rocks and shaking the bushes. We'll find a snake. 2 times I've seen bears in Ok mnt Park too, not to frighten you, just to be bear aware. It's about a 3.5 hour walk back to the car or maybe a little longer with the weight on your back (keep the weight in mind when you pack because you're walking it out). We will most likely see trail runners in the morning too, this is a special breed who will run 26 km just because, they will pass you twice. I guess that's about it. I've given you guys about a month to mill it in your mind if you want to give this a go. Also this does not exclude the boomers, you want to come then come. Oh and you should probably bring something to eat for a day and a half too. As always, who knows what will happen? Maybe you’ll make a new friend like the littlest hobo. I'm just throwing it out there.
