Mission Greenway Phase 2: Scenic Canyon Park (Gallagher's Canyon)
Mission Greenway Phase 2: Scenic Canyon Park (Gallagher's Canyon)
Rutland
The second phase of the Mission Creek Greenway included a trail extending 9.2 km into Scenic Canyon Regional Park. Unlike the first phase which is relatively easy, this canyon environment has steeper grades and although recent development has made the trails a lot more stable, some parts may not be suitable for children or those with novice experience.
This extension created by The Friends of Mission Creek Society with funding from the Regional District and a grant from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program includes a wetland boardwalk, switchbacks and three bridges.
The 500m switchbacks lead you to a viewpoint below Gallagher's canyon, work on this area included adding wooden tie stairs to make the slope a little easier to manoeuvre. Once you reach the flatland, a ground-level view of Layer Cake Mountain awaits, the mountain is known to be the only volcanic formation of its kind worldwide.
This area is one of the most popular cycling routes in Kelowna; watch out for cyclists.
The trail data for this hike is computed one-way for the trip from the main parking lot to the waterfall at the end of the trail past the ranger station.
